RESUMO

Quality of recovery (QoR) is a significant component of peri-operative health status and is influenced by patients' characteristics and surgical and anesthetic methods. The QoR-15 scale is a patient-reported outcome questionnaire that measures postoperative QoR. The validity of the QoR-15 scale has been proven in many languages. In this study, we aimed to translate the QoR-15 questionnaire into Turkish and evaluate its validity in the Turkish population. After being translated into Turkish, the questionnaire was administered to 190 patients who underwent obstetric, gynecological, orthopedic, or thoracic surgery under general or regional anesthesia. The Turkish version of QoR-15 (QoR-15T) was administered 2 times: before surgery and 24 hour after surgery. The feasibility, reliability, validity and responsiveness of the QoR-15T were evaluated. Because 13 patients were discharged within 24 hour postoperatively, the study was completed with 177 patients. The recruitment and completion rates of questionnaire were 95% and 93.1% respectively. The completing time of the questionnaire was 2.5 minutes preoperatively and 3.5 minutes postoperatively. The scale yielded a Cronbach α value of 0.75, a Cohen effect size of 1.42, and a standardized response mean of 1.39. There was a significant positive correlation (95% confidence interval; R = 0.68, P < .001) between QoR-15T and visual analog scale postoperatively. The correlation of the items with the total QoR-15T score ranged from 0.19 to 0.60. The total scores of preoperative and postoperative QoR-15T were mean: 130.67, standard deviation: 15.78 and mean: 108.23, standard deviation: 13.06, respectively, with a significant difference between them (P < .01). The QoR-15T is feasible, reliable, valid, and responsive among patients undergoing surgery under general and regional anesthesia.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a brittle biodegradable thermoplastic due to its relatively high glass transition temperature (Tg âˆ¼ 60 °C). This Tg limits the using of PLA in flexible applications, for example packaging films. In this study, it has been shown for the first time that the Liquidambar Orientalis (LO) oil as a nontoxic, environmentally friendly, and green additive can be successfully used as a natural, renewable, and sustainable plasticizer to produce flexible PLA parts and improve its thermal and physical properties and application potential. Natural oil obtained from Liquidambar Orientalis tree was introduced into PLA (as 10, 20, and 30 phr) by melt compounding (MC) and solution mixing (SM) methods. Effect of LO oil amount on the glass transition temperature, melt and cold crystallization behaviors, and degree of crystallinity values of samples were determined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, solid state viscoelastic properties of PLA films were also characterized with dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests. Results showed that LO oil significantly reduced the Tg and storage modulus (E') value of PLA and LO oil showed an excellent plasticizing effect for PLA due to reducing strong hydrogen bonds and secondary interactions between PLA chains.

HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to investigate the effects of cross education (CE) on rotator cuff (RC) muscle strength recovery and shoulder function in patients who underwent arthroscopic anterior shoulder stabilization surgery. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients who underwent shoulder stabilization surgery were included in the study (age, 25 ± 6 years; body mass index, 24.8 ± 3.6 kg/m2). The patients were randomly divided into either the CE group (n = 14) or the control group (n = 14). All patients received a standardized rehabilitation program until the end of the 12th postoperative week. The CE group also received isokinetic training of the nonoperative shoulder focusing on the RC muscles (twice a week, 3 sets of 10 repetitions). RC muscle strength was measured preoperatively and at 3 and 6 months postoperatively using an isokinetic dynamometer at 60°/s and 180°/s angular velocities. Shoulder function was assessed with the Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test and Y-Balance Test-Upper Quarter. Analyses of covariance were used for the statistical analyses. RESULTS: At 6 months postoperatively, at 60°/s angular velocity, there was higher internal rotator strength in the CE group (P = .02) and similar external rotator strength (P = .62) between the groups. At 180°/s angular velocity, both internal rotator strength (P = .04) and external rotator strength (P = .02) were higher in the CE group. The Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test (P = .47), Y-Balance Test-Upper Quarter (P = .95), and Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index (P = .12) scores were similar between the groups at 6 months after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: CE in the early period of postoperative rehabilitation following stabilization surgery improves RC strength recovery. However, it has no effect on functional outcomes. Integrating a CE program into the postoperative rehabilitation protocol may help to improve dynamic shoulder stability but not functional capacity.

Mood disorders caused by chemotherapy have become more important as the survival of cancer patients increases, and new studies in this field will contribute to the prevention of this disorder. For this purpose, we used methotrexate, a chemotherapeutic agent frequently preferred in oncological cases. Mtx was administered as a single dose of 100 mg/kg intraperitoneally to male Wistar albino rats. Since oxidative stress plays an important role in chemotherapy-induced emotional impairment, n-acetylcysteine (NAC), a potent antioxidant, was administered at 500 mg/kg in two doses before Mtx administration. We evaluated anxiety and depression-like behaviors 24 h after Mtx administration, as well as some oxidative and inflammatory markers in blood serum and hippocampal tissue, acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) release in hippocampal tissue. In rats, Mtx induced anxiety and depression-like behaviors as well as abnormalities in oxidative and inflammatory markers in blood serum and hippocampal tissue, increased AChE activity in hippocampal tissue, and decreased BDNF release. NAC treatment was found to ameliorate Mtx-induced anxiety and depression-like behaviors, increase antioxidant capacity, reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory response, and regulate AChE activity and BDNF release. In conclusion, the fact that NAC treatment of Mtx was effective is important for revising the treatment strategies for individuals suffering from this disorder, and this effect is thought to be related to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory power of NAC.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the patient profile at a medium-volume hospital located in the earthquake zone among patients who received orthopedic treatment within the first five days after the natural disaster that was considered a major earthquake. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between February 6th, 2023 and February 10th, 2023, a total of 338 patients (156 males, 182 females; mean age: 42.2±9.7 years; range, 0 to 87 years) who received orthopedic treatment in our center were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into four groups according to age as follows: infants (younger than one year of age), children (one to 13 years), adults (14 to 59 years), and elderly (60 years or older). RESULTS: Considering the age distribution, 291 (86%) patients were young adults. A total of 173 orthopedic surgeries were performed, including internal fixation in 63 patients, external fixation in 11 patients, upper/lower extremity fasciotomy in 47 patients, amputation in 39 patients, and soft tissue debridement in 13 patients. CONCLUSION: It is of utmost importance to recognize the principles of emergency fracture fixation and fasciotomy to successfully perform orthopedic surgeries after a natural disaster such as a major earthquake, particularly when the number of earthquake victims is considerably high.

Suture anchors are frequently used in shoulder arthroscopy. After suture anchors are inserted into bone, the suture transfer between portals should be performed carefully. Sometimes, as a result of the transfer of the wrong suture limb, the suture anchor may be unloaded. The suture dyeing technique provides secure suture retrieval between portals.

Introduction It is seen that shift work causes various biological, psychological, and behavioral problems in individuals. This study aimed to determine the eating attitudes and behaviors of health workers working in shifts in a stressful environment such as the emergency service and to examine the relationship between depression, anxiety, and stress levels and eating behaviors (emotional eating, restrictive eating, and external eating) in terms of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Material and Methods Sociodemographic data form; Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS); and Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) were used. The study sample consisted of 92 employees (doctor, nurse, emergency medical technician (EMT), medical secretary, and security, staff) who were actively on duty in the emergency department of Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Medical Faculty Training and Research Hospital. Results In our study, when the eating behavior of emergency service workers was evaluated in terms of "emotional, external, and restricted eating" sub-dimensions, depression (p=0.043), anxiety (p=0.017), increased stress levels (p=0.002), being female (p=0.022), nurse-emergency medical technician profession (p=0.001), working in 24-hour shifts (p=0.001), and diet history (p=0.013) were associated with "emotional eating." In addition, an increase in depression levels (p=0.048), being single (p=0.015), working in 24-hour shifts (p=0.005), a decrease in age (p<0.001) with "extrinsic eating," an increase in body mass index (BMI) (p=0.020) and waist circumference (p=0.049), and diet history (p<0.001) were associated with "restricted eating." Conclusions In our study, among the sociodemographic factors, being female, being single, working in 24-hour shifts, diet history, nurse-EMT profession, and undergraduate education level were found to increase the tendency to develop eating behavior problems. An increase in depression levels, being single, working in 24-hour shifts, and a decrease in age were associated with "extrinsic eating." There is a correlation between depression, anxiety, and stress scores and emotional eating scores. Additionally, we found significant correlations between body mass index, waist circumference, diet history, and restricted eating scores. In the approach to eating behavior problems, it is important to determine the individual eating behavior disorder. Due to the increased risk of eating behavior disorder in those who work in long shifts such as 24 hours, it will be possible to organize work programs and increase the quality of service.

This study evaluated selected structural and physical properties, such as degree of conversion (DC), Vickers hardness (VHN), and compression strength (CS), of three new dual-cure bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs; ACTIVA, HyperFIL, and Fill-Up) and compared them to those of a conventional RBC (Filtek Z250) at three clinically relevant depths. Samples (n=180) were prepared in three depths (2,4, and 6mm). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and VHN and CS tests were performed. The DC value was calculated by considering the relative change in the aliphatic C=C peaks. The fractured surfaces of representative samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were statistically evaluated using two-way analysis of variance and post hoc Bonferroni tests (p<0.05). According to the VHN results, Filtek Z250 showed the highest bottom/top hardness ratio (97.94±1.01) at 2mm thickness and ACTIVA showed the lowest bottom/top hardness ratio (43.48±5.64) at 6mm thickness (p<0.001). According to the FTIR results, the DC decreased with increasing thickness in all materials (p<0.05). Filtek Z250 showed the highest (301±12.4 MPa) and ACTIVA exhibited the lowest (232±17.2 MPa) CS values at 2mm thickness (p<0.05). The lowest CS values were obtained for ACTIVA, and the highest values were obtained for Filtek Z250 for samples with thicknesses of 4 and 6mm, respectively (p<0.05). The structural features of restorative composites, such as the resin chemistry and filler type and content, and the operational parameters (i.e., material thickness and curing conditions) strongly affect crosslinking reactions and thus the DC, VHN, and CS values.


Este estudio evaluó propiedades físicas y estructurales, como el grado de conversión (DC), la dureza Vickers (VHN) y la resistencia a la compresión (CS), de tres nuevos compósitos a base de resina de curado dual tipo bulk (RBC; ACTIVA , HyperFIL y Fill-Up) y los comparó con los de una resina compuesta convencional (Filtek Z250) en tres profundidades clínicamente relevantes. Se prepararon muestras (n=180) en tres profundidades (2,4 y 6mm). Se realizaron análisis de espectroscopia infrarroja por transformada de Fourier (FTIR) y pruebas VHN y CS. El valor de DC se calculó considerando el cambio relativo en los picos alifáticos C=C. Las superficies fracturadas de muestras representativas se caracterizaron mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB). Los datos se evaluaron estadísticamente mediante análisis de varianza de dos vías y pruebas post hoc de Bonferroni (p<0,05). De acuerdo con los resultados de VHN, Filtek Z250 mostró la relación de dureza inferior/superior más alta (97,94±1,01) con un espesor de 2mm y ACTIVA mostró la relación de dureza inferior/superior más baja (43,48±5,64) con un espesor de 6mm (p<0,001). De acuerdo con los resultados de FTIR, la DC disminuyó al aumentar el espesor en todos los materiales (p<0,05). Filtek Z250 mostró los valores de CS más altos (301±12,4 MPa) y ACTIVA los más bajos (232±17,2 MPa) a 2mm de espesor (p<0,05). Los valores más bajos de CS se obtuvieron para ACTIVA y los valores más altos para Filtek Z250 para muestras con espesores de 4 y 6mm, respectivamente (p<0,05). Las características estructurales de las resinas compuestas de restauración, como la química; además del tipo y contenido del relleno, y los parámetros operativos (es decir, el espesor del material y las condiciones de curado) afectan en gran medida las reacciones de interacción química y, por lo tanto, los valores de DC, VHN y CS.

BACKGROUND: Although athletes are mostly allowed to return to play 6 months after shoulder stabilization surgery, there are inadequate data about their functional status during this period. HYPOTHESES: Performance tests would reveal insufficiency in the functional capacity of shoulder 6 months after stabilization surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: A total of 32 male athletes with arthroscopic anterior capsulolabral repair (AACR) were included in the study. Shoulder internal and external rotator (IR-ER) strength was assessed using isokinetic dynamometer at 60°/s and 180°/s angular velocities preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Shoulder function was assessed with closed kinetic chain upper extremity stability (CKCUES) test, Y balance test-upper quarter (YBT-UQ), and unilateral seated shot-put test (USSPT) at 6 months postoperation. Western Ontario shoulder instability index (WOSI) and Tampa scale of kinesiophobia (TSK) were used for the self-assessment of the shoulder. Mixed-model ANOVA was used to analyze the changes in the IR-ER strength on both shoulders. Limb symmetry index (LSI) was calculated for the IR-ER strength, YBT-UQ, and USSPT scores. RESULTS: Shoulder IR strength was higher at 6 months postoperatively compared with preoperatively. The LSI was 76.4% and 76.6% for ER strength, and 94.2% and 94% for IR strength at 60°/s and 180°/s angular velocities, respectively, at the postoperative 6 month timepoint. The mean CKCUES test score was 21.8 ± 2.6 touches and the LSI was 94.7% for the YBT-UQ and 102.5% for the USSPT. WOSI (P < 0.001) and TSK (P = 0.001) scores were significantly lower at 6 months postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Functional status of the patients with shoulder stabilization surgery improved considerably 6 months after surgery, yet they did not fully recover function. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Exercise programs focusing on shoulder ER strength and shoulder performance should be emphasized after stabilization surgery.

Early diagnosis and treatment of postspinal hypotension (PSH) in obstetric anaesthesia reduces the risk of maternofetal complications. In this study, the effect of EtCO2 and the integrated pulmonary index (IPI) in predicting PSH was investigated. Patients scheduled for cesarean section under spinal anaesthesia were included. The Capnostream 35 respiratory monitor (Medtronic, Inc., Dublin, Ireland) was used for EtCO2 and IPI. PSH developed in 52 (63.4%) of the 82 patients. EtCO2 and IPI values decreased significantly compared with baseline values in patients who developed PSH. There were statistically significant differences in EtCO2 (p = 0.001) and the IPI change (p = 0.045) in patients who developed PSH compared with those who did not. It was found that the EtCO2 difference had an independent effect on predicting PSH (p < 0.05), whereas the IPI difference did not (p > 0.05). One unit decrease in EtCO2 from the baseline increased the risk of PSH by 3.3 times. ROC curve analysis showed that the magnitude of change in EtCO2 was diagnostic for predicting PSH (AUC: 0.90 (0.83-0.97; p < 0.001)). IPI showed no predictive value for postspinal hypotension in cesarean section. However, EtCO2 monitoring, which is non-invasive and real-time monitoring, can be used to predict postspinal hypotension.

Objectives: The effective way to reduce the risk of fecal incontinence (FI) in primary repaired obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS) patients is to accurately detect the injury and provide complete anatomical reconstruction. The aim of the study was to evaluate the short-term and long-term results of OASIS cases that were diagnosed by an experienced surgical team and whose perineal body and anal sphincters were reconstructed separately. Material and Methods: Sixteen patients that required consultations due to anal sphincter damage during vaginal delivery and underwent anatomical reconstruction due to Grade 3c and Grade 4 sphincter damage between 2007 and 2019 were included in the study. These cases were divided into three groups [Group 1 (≤12 months), Group 2 (12-60 months), Group 3 (≥60 months)] according to the time elapsed until anal manometry, and incontinence questionnaires were conducted in the postoperative period. Recto-anal inhibitory reflex (RAIR), mean resting (IB) and squeezing (SB) pressures were measured by anal manometry. Anal incontinence (AI) and FI rates were determined by questionnaires. Anal sphincter damage repair techniques (overlapping, end-to-end) were determined. These parameters were compared between the three groups. Results: Mean age of the patients was 27.5 (16-35) years. Six (37.5%) patients had Grade 3c, while 10 (62.5%) had Grade 4 injury. The overall mean RP and SP were 35 (26-56) mmHg and 67 (31-100) mmHg, respectively. Mean RP and SP were 46/67 mmHg, 33.5/75.5 mmHg, and 37.5/70.5 mmHg in Groups 1, 2, and 3 respectively. There was no difference between the three groups in terms of mean RP and SP (p= 0.691, p= 0.673). The rate of AI and FI in all patients were 18.75% and 12.5%, respectively while the rate of severe AI incontinence was 6%. Severe AI was observed in 1 (16.7%) case in Group 1, mild AI was observed in 1 (25%) case in group 2, and in 1 (16.7%) case in Group 3. RAIR was positive in all patients. In Group 1, 5 (83.3%) patients underwent overlapping repair, and in Group 3, 6 (100%) patients underwent end-to-end repair. This difference was statistically significant (p= 0.011). Conclusion: In vaginal births, evaluation of anal sphincter damage, determination of perineal body structures and anal sphincters separately and performing anatomical reconstruction when needed significantly reduce the rate of FI in the short and long term.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the laboratory markers used in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA) and present the parameters that can be used to predict acute perforated appendicitis. METHODS: The cases who underwent an appendectomy in our clinic between September 2018 and March 2020 were evaluated retrospectively. A total of 530 patients who met the study criteria were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of an intraoperative perforation. Non-complicated appendicitis patients formed Group-1, and perforated appendicitis patients formed Group-2. The demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of the patients were compared. RESULTS: The number of non-complicated patients in Group 1 was 443, while there were 87 (16.4%) patients in Group 2 who had perforated appendicitis. The mean age of the patients in the normal appendicitis group was 29.90±10.51 years, and the mean age of the patients in the perforated appendicitis group was 36.32±14.58 years. In the normal appendicitis group, 257 (58%) of the patients were male, 186 (42%) were female, while in the perforated appendicitis group, 38 (43.7%) were male, 49 (56.3%) were female. In the perfo-rated appendicitis group, white blood cell (WBC) value was 16.19±4.71 (p<0.001), C-reactive protein (CRP) value was 146.28±113.59 (p<0.001), total bilirubin value was 0.71±0.36 (p<0.001), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was 10.85±6.25 (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: We believe that the WBC, total bilirubin, CRP, and NLR values obtained within this study, which is tested in the rapid and easily accessible blood tests in routine examinations that can contribute to the prediction of perforation.

Background: We recently reported the clinical safety profile of RJX, a well-defined intravenous GMP-grade pharmaceutical formulation of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory vitamins as active ingredients, in a Phase 1 study in healthy volunteers (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03680105) (Uckun et al., Front. Pharmacol. 11, 594321. 10.3389/fphar.2020.594321). The primary objective of the present study was to examine the effects of GMP-grade RJX on wound and burn injury healing in diabetic rats. Methods: In the present study, a rat model of T2DM was used that employs HFD in combination with a single injection of STZ intraperitoneally (i.p) at a moderate dose level (45 mg/kg). Anesthetized diabetic rats underwent full-thickness skin excision on the back or were subjected to burn injury via a heated brass probe and then started on treatments with normal saline (NS = vehicle) or RJX administered via intraperitoneal injections for three weeks. Findings: Notably, diabetic rats treated with the 1.25 mL/kg or 2.5 mL/kg RJX (DM+RJX groups) rapidly healed their wounds as fast as non-diabetic control rats. Inflammatory cell infiltration in the dermis along with fibrin and cell debris on the epithelial layer persisted for up to 14 days in the DM+NS group but not in RJX-treated groups. The histopathological score of wound healing on days 7 and 14 was better in diabetic rats treated with RJX than diabetic rats treated with NS and comparable to the scores for non-diabetic healthy rats consistent with an accelerated healing process. The residual wound area of RJX-treated rats was significantly smaller than that of NS-treated diabetic rats at each evaluation time point (P<0.001). The accelerating effect of RJX on diabetic wound healing was dose-dependent. We obtained similar results in the burn injury model. Our results demonstrate that RJX - at a dose level >10-fold lower than its clinical maximum tolerated dose (MTD) - accelerates the healing of excision wounds as well burn injury in diabetic rats.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a musculoskeletal disorder mainly found in elderly individuals. Modern treatment of OA, like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid injections, etc., is linked to long-term side effects. We evaluated the anti-osteoarthritic properties of a novel joint health formula (JHF) containing Bisdemethoxycurcumin enriched curcumin, 3-O-Acetyl-11-keto-beta-Boswellic acid-enriched Boswellia, and Ashwagandha in monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced knee OA in rats. Twenty-eight female rats were distributed into four groups: Control, OA, OA + JHF (100 mg/kg), and OA + JHF (200 mg/kg). JHF decreased the right joint diameters but increased the paw area and stride length compared to the OA group with no treatment. JHF significantly reduced the arthritic conditions after four weeks of supplementation (p < 0.05). JHF significantly decreased TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-10, COMP, and CRP in the serum of osteoarthritic rats (p < 0.0001). We observed reduced lipid peroxidation but increased SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT activities in response to JHF treatment in OA animals. JHF down-regulated MMP-3, COX-2, and LOX-5 and improved the histological structure of the knee joint of osteoarthritic rats. JHF demonstrated a protective effect against osteoarthritis, possibly due to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity in experimentally induced osteoarthritis in rats, and could be an effective option in the management of OA.

Objective: Hydatid cyst disease is a helminthic infection caused by Echinococcus granulous, which is encountered with cysts in many organs, especially the liver and lungs. Soft tissue and intramuscular hydatid cyst are rare even in endemic countries. It is challengig to distinguish subcutaneous and intramuscular hydatid cysts from soft tissue tumors. This study aimed to present the clinical features of primary soft tissue hydatid cyst cases without liver and lung hydatid cyst in the Southeast Anatolian region, where hydatid cyst disease is endemic. Methods: Patients admitted to the Sanliurfa Training and Research Hospital General Surgery and Orthopedics and Traumatology Outpatient Clinic between September 2018 and December 2019 with complaints of pain and/or swelling under the skin and soft tissue were evaluated. After the examinations, the records of the patients who were operated on with a pre-diagnosis of hydatid cyst and whose histopathologic evaluation was reported as a hydatid cyst were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Eight patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 39.75±14.80 years. Lesions were located in neck (12.5%), left thoracic posterior area (25%), gluteus (25%), thigh (12.5%), right upper quadrant of abdominal wall (12.5%), and under the right clavicle (12.5%). When imaging methods were examined, ultrasonography was performed in 7 patients (87.5%), chest computed tomography was performed in 1 patient (12.5%), and magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 2 patients (25%). Conclusion: Diagnosis of hydatid cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue tumors in countries of endemic regions for hydatid cyst disease such as Southeastern Anatolia Region, Turkey.

This paper reports effects of ultraviolet (UV) light radiation on the physicochemical, electrical and mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) cable insulating materials. Changes in structural and morphological properties of UV-aged samples were characterized by various analytical methods such as attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Additionally, elongation at break, tensile strength, dielectric strength, and optical properties were also evaluated. Changes in some physical properties of LDPE after exposing to UV irradiation clearly highlighted that the polymer underwent the structural degradation. In addition, it was also found that such degradation yielded both crosslinking and chain scission as two competing processes during UV aging.

Biomedical experimental studies such as pull-out (PO), screw loosening experience variability mechanical properties of fresh bone, legal procedures of cadaver bone samples and time-consuming problems. Finite Element Method (FEM) could overcome experimental problems in biomechanics. However, material modelling of bone is quite difficult, which has viscoelastic and viscoplastic properties. The study presents a bone material model which is constructed at the strain rates with the Johnson-Cook (JC) material model, one of the robust constitutive material models. The JC material constants of trabecular bone are determined by the curve fitting method at strain rates for the 3D PO finite element simulation, which defines the screw-bone interface relationship. The PO simulation is performed using the Abaqus/CAE software program. Bone fracture mechanisms are simulated with dynamic/explicit solutions during the PO phenomenon. The paper exposes whether the strain rate has effects on the PO performance. Moreover, simulation reveals the relationship between pedicle screw diameter and PO performance. The results obtained that the maximum pull-out force (POF) improves as both the screw diameter and the strain rate increase. For 5.5 mm diameter pedicle screw POFs were 487, 517 and 1708 N at strain rate 0.00015, 0.015 and 0.015 s-1, respectively. The FOFs obtained from the simulation of the other screw were 730, 802 and 2008 N at strain rates 0.00015, 0.0015 and 0.015, respectively. PO phenomenon was also simulated realistically in the finite element analysis (FEA).

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to present to the literature a rare injury mechanism that causes knee dislocation (KD) and describe its characteristics. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with KD who were treated between January 2014 and December 2019 at our hospital was performed. Patients with KD due to rotavator machine injury were included in Group 1 and all patients with KD due to other etiological reasons were included in Group 2. Patients' age, gender, side, injury mechanism, time to surgery, length of stay (LOS), operation time, follow-up time, neurological injury status, vascular injury status, open injury status, and surgical interventions were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 34 patients were evaluated in the study. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of age, gender, side, or follow-up time (p = .915, p = 1.000, p = .682, p = .374, respectively). However, LOS and time to surgery were statistically significantly longer in Group 1 (p = .037, p = .010, respectively). Moreover, neurovascular damage was statistically significantly more common in Group 1. CONCLUSION: As a rare injury mechanism for KD, rotavator machine injuries cause more neurovascular injuries in patients compared to other injury mechanisms and increase the time to surgery and LOS due to preoperative soft tissue damage.

The current work aimed to examine the properties of oral supplementation of niacinamide and undenatured type II collagen (UCII) on the inflammation and joint pain behavior of rats with osteoarthritis (OA). Forty-nine Wistar rats were allocated into seven groups; control (no MIA), MIA as a non-supplemental group with monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced knee osteoarthritis, MIA + undenatured type II collagen (UCII) at 4 mg/kg BW, MIA + Niacinamide at 40 mg/kg BW (NA40), MIA + Niacinamide at 200 mg/kg BW (NA200), MIA + UCII + NA40 and MIA + UCII + NA200. Serum IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, COMP, and CRP increased in rats with OA and decreased in UCII and NA groups (p < 0.05). Rats with osteoarthritis had greater serum MDA and knee joint MMP-3, NF-κB, and TGß protein levels and decreased in treated groups with UCII and NA (p < 0.05). The rats with OA also bore elevated joint diameters with joint pain behavior measured as decreased the stride lengths, the paw areas, and the paw widths, and increased the Kellgren-Lawrence and the Mankin scores (p < 0.05) and decreased in UCII treated groups. These results suggest the combinations with the UCII + NA supplementation as being most effective and reduce the inflammation responses for most OA symptoms in rats.
